It has been said that if you stand in Piccadilly Circus long enough, everyone in the world will pass by. The large road junction is a popular gathering place for tourists and locals alike and was rather romantically considered the heart of the British Empire. The 'Circus' has nothing to do with performing animals. The name comes from the Latin for a circle, and refers to the roughly round shape of the traffic junction where Piccadilly meets Regent Street. The Circus was built in and is perhaps best known today for the large neon signs and video display mounted on a building on the northern side of the junction. Directly under the junction lies the Piccadilly Circus underground station, and standing around the edges of the Circus are several popular theatres, including the Criterion and the London Pavilion.

11 Secrets of London's Eros Statue | Londonist

It was built in to connect Regent Street with Piccadilly. In this context, a circus, from the Latin word meaning "circle", is a round open space at a street junction. The Circus is close to major shopping and entertainment areas in the West End. Its status as a major traffic junction has made Piccadilly Circus a busy meeting place and a tourist attraction in its own right. The Circus is particularly known for its video display and neon signs mounted on the corner building on the northern side, as well as the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain and statue of Anteros which is popularly, though mistakenly, believed to be of Eros.

Why is it there? The Ultimate London Discovery Map. The statue — full name The Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain — was created in to commemorate the works of Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, a philanthropist who worked at abolishing child labour and ensuring children were educated in its stead. He worked to improve care for the mentally ill and to stop the opium trade. In fact, he was held in such high esteem that he was offered a state burial in Westminster Abbey prior to his death, an offer he declined.
